In 1963, teenager Frank William Abagnale Jr. lived in New Rochelle, New York, with his father Frank Abagnale Sr. and French mother Paula. When Frank Sr. runs into tax troubles with the IRS, the family is forced to move out of their big house and into a small apartment. One day, Frank learns that his mother is having an affair with his father’s friend Jack Barnes.
When his parents’ divorce, Frank runs away. Needing money, he turns to reliable scammers to survive, and his scams are getting bolder. He poses as a Pan Am pilot and forges the airline’s paychecks. Soon his forgeries are price millions of dollars. News of the crimes reaches the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Agent Carl Hanratty begins to track Frank down. Carl finds Frank at the hotel, but Frank tricks Carl into thinking he is Barry Allen’s Secret Service agent. He escapes before Carl realizes he has been tricked.

Frank asks Brenda’s attorney father for permission to marry her and also wants her to help pass the Louisiana bar exam, which Frank takes. Carl tracks Frank down to Brenda’s engagement, but Frank escapes through the bedroom window. Before running, Frank asks Brenda to meet him at Miami International Airport in two days. At the airport, Open sees Brenda but also sees the plainclothes officers and realizes she ratted him out, then leaves. He then mistook himself for a pilot again and set up a fake flight attendant recruitment campaign at a local college. He hires eight women as flight attendants, hides from Carl and other agents walking through the airport with flight attendants, and escapes on a flight to Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport, Spain.
In 1967, Carl found Frank in his mother’s hometown of Montrichard, France. Frank is in a French prison in Marseille, where he almost died due to poor conditions. Carl takings Frank on a flight back to the United States. As they approach, Carl informs Frank that his father is dead. Heartbroken, Frank escapes the plane and arrives at his mother’s home, who has remarried and has a daughter. Frank turns himself to Carl and spends 12 years in a maximum-security prison.
